CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“What do you know about cellars?” I asked Patrick over the jar of beets. “Quentin said he saw Roselyn go in the cellar on the property of the old hunting cabin.”

“There’s a cellar?” Patrick didn’t even know, and he had done the electrical upgrades to the cabin after Aunt Maxi had bought it as a rental. He forked a beet and put the entire thing in his mouth.

“Yeah.” I stood over the gas stove in our house with the tongs in my hand, flipping over the fried chicken. Pepper and Sassy sat at my feet, both wide-eyed in hopes something was about to drop. “He said she’d gathered up some things and that’s where she went. Do you think she’s hidden the money there?”

Patrick shook his head and smiled.

“You’ve got one active imagination.” He forked another beet and held it up to my mouth. “I don’t like beets, but I like Jean’s.”

“Honestly, Patrick, do you think she’s hidden something in there?” I couldn’t shake off the idea it would be a wonderful place to hide something. “I’m guessing Aunt Maxi doesn’t know the cellar is there.”

“If it will make you feel better, after you get the Bean Hive open and Bunny is there, I’ll pick you up, and then we can go eat lunch together.” He put the fork down and walked over behind me. He wrapped his arms around my waist and rested his chin on my shoulder. “That fried chicken looks so good.”

“There’s nothing I love more than feeding you.” I thought about Kirk for that moment and recalled how he didn’t eat anything I baked, fried, or cooked. All of it was too fattening for him.

Even though I had accepted the fact Quentin was now my mom’s new boyfriend and he was with her the night of the murder, it still tickled my curiosity to talk to Kirk about the whole situation.

Kirk was one of those guys who loved to know things others didn’t. Sorta hold-it-over-your-head type of guy, and knowing Mom and Aunt Maxi were keeping something from me would be right up his alley.

“Why don’t we do lunch at Bee Happy Resort?” I asked.

Patrick’s chin popped off my shoulder as his arms unraveled. He folded them and moved to the side of the stove, leaning his hip against the counter.

“What’s going on in that head of yours?” he asked.

“I know you’re going to think I’m crazy,” I started to say.

“Me? Nah. If you’ve got something in your head, I know you’ve got a reason. Spill it,” he said and reached up to the open shelf to grab a plate so I could take the fried chicken out of the cast iron.

“I only want to make sure Quentin’s story is correct about him working for Kirk.” That was really it.

“Do you have a reason to not believe him? I mean, the guy knows you can ask and find out.” Patrick grabbed the bowl of green beans and the bowl of mashed potatoes while I took the plate of chicken.
